Blackhorse Lane ‘Mini Holland’ corridor improvement

London Borough of Walthamstow

The highway works along the Blackhorse Lane corridor in Walthamstow form part of the London Borough of Walthamstow's ‘Mini Holland’ project. Mini Holland schemes aim to encourage more people to cycle, and to cycle more often, by improving streets and public for everyone. Part of the project includes highway improvements associated with a segregated, off-road cycle route along Blackhorse Lane.

Objectives and Challenges

Gateway TSP contributed to a Stage 3 Road Safety Audit undertaken by RKS Associates. The scheme has generated interest from local residents and road users and their comments were provided to the Audit Team. Amongst the concerns identified were vehicles pulling out from side-roads, lack of visibility at certain locations and conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists.

Solutions

  • Ensure sufficient carriageway space for vehicle manoeuvres
  • Reduce street clutter (advertsing boards etc)
  • Improve delineation between cycle facilities and either the carriageway and/or footways
  • Improve signing to heighten road users' awareness of the scheme
  • Improve drainage
